Collage feels like play to me. Compared to ink painting, it is much freer and less demanding. If something doesn’t work, I can change it before gluing it down or cover it with a different piece of paper.
I enjoy combining Korean Hanji with Japanese Origami paper. I also like cutting out glossy colors and interesting textures from magazines and recombining them into new and meaningful images.
Sanctuary in the wilderness
9 x 9 in. Collage
In Genesis 28, Jacob flees from his brother Esau after taking his father’s blessing and finds himself alone in the wilderness far from home and uncertain about his future. As he sleeps with a stone beneath his head, he dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven and hears God promise, “I am with you.” During my years in the United States, I too experienced times of deep loneliness and hardship, yet I encountered God’s help, presence, and grace in unexpected ways. Through that experience, I came to realize that the wilderness itself can become a sanctuary—a place where God meets us; the arch shape of this work represents that sanctuary within the wilderness. This work is also a self-portrait.The resting figure represents me in my own wilderness.
Healing
6 x 6.5 Collage
I created this collage to commemorate the images that comforted me during chemotherapy.
A worn bar of soap took the shape of a dove, which I saw as
a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The full moon represented healing and wholeness, while the V-shaped branches suggested victory.
I brought these images together with the Chinese character for “healing.” The small circles below represent the pills I took during treatment.
